August Is for Action: Let’s Protect and Preserve Nature!

August 07, 2025

Every month in the 2025 Environmental Calendar has a special theme, and August is all about ecological preservation. That means it's time to learn how to protect and care for nature. From forests and oceans to wildlife and clean air, August encourages us to take a closer look at how we treat the planet, review past efforts, and commit to new ones. This year, we’re embracing the message of Small Acts Big Impacts™—a powerful reminder that even tiny changes can ripple into real-world results.

Whether you're already an Earth hero or just starting to explore how you can help, this month is your chance to show that small actions add up to big change.

What Is Ecological Preservation?

Ecological preservation means keeping natural places safe, healthy, and wild for the future. This includes protecting animals, plants, forests, oceans, and even the air we breathe. It’s about making sure nature has room to thrive, without being polluted, overused, or destroyed. It’s a little different from conservation, which might allow some use of resources—preservation means leaving it mostly untouched.

Think of a rainforest. Taking a Small Acts Big Impacts™ approach might mean refusing single-use plastics that contribute to deforestation, or choosing products made from recycled paper. One choice may feel small, but it’s part of a larger ripple of positive change.

Why August?

August may feel like the end of summer fun, but it’s also a great time to reflect and re-energize. Many schools and communities have already done amazing eco-projects earlier in the year, and now’s the time to look back and ask, “What worked? What more can we do?”

The theme “A month to protect and preserve” invites us to take the Small Acts Big Impacts™ pledge—to do our part, no matter how big or small, to help the planet. Whether you’re biking instead of driving or planting wildflowers for pollinators, your efforts matter.

Past Wins, Present Challenges

Over the years, kids and teens just like you have sparked change. Some created recycling programs at school. Others organized local cleanups or spread awareness online. These may have started as small acts, but they created big, meaningful impacts.

Still, the Earth faces real challenges—climate change, deforestation, and pollution, just to name a few. That’s why this campaign matters. Small Acts Big Impacts™ encourages all of us to set bold goals, track progress, and cheer each other on. Together, we’re stronger.

Your Role in Preservation

You don’t have to be an expert or an adult to protect the planet. You just need to care—and act. Here are some ways to get started this August:

1. Start a small project at home or school.
Build a compost jar, plant a mini-garden, or organize a recycling challenge. One effort can inspire a whole group.

2. Educate and inspire others.
Learn something new about the Earth, then share it—through art, posters, presentations, or social media. Your voice matters.

3. Reduce waste every day.
Say no to plastic bags, reuse school supplies, or pack lunches in containers. Every wrapper you skip is a win for the planet.

4. Help local wildlife.
Make a bird feeder, create a bug hotel, or leave wildflowers in your yard. These simple actions can protect entire ecosystems.

5. Speak up for nature.
Ask your school to go greener. Write to local leaders. Suggest eco-club activities. When young people lead, others follow.

These steps are all part of the Small Acts Big Impacts™ mindset—daily decisions that build toward a cleaner, greener future.

Set a Goal for the Year

August is the perfect time to set a goal. Maybe you’ll cut your plastic use in half, learn 10 ways to save energy, or help your school host an eco-week. What matters most is that your goal comes from the heart.

Write it down, and don’t forget to check in each month. Share your progress with friends, family, or classmates. Invite others to take the pledge too. The more people involved, the greater the impact.
