Hey Smart Shoppers! 🛒🌱
Today’s Plastic-Free Challenge is a little nutty—because we’re diving into the world of bulk bins! 🎉
Have you ever seen the big bins at the store filled with nuts, cereal, pasta, or dried fruit? Those are called bulk bins, and they’re one of the BEST ways to shop without plastic.
Let’s learn how to use them—and why they’re your new best friend!
Bulk bins are big tubs or containers at some grocery stores. Instead of buying food in plastic packaging, you scoop out just what you need into your own reusable container or bag!
You can find things like:
Oats and granola
Nuts and trail mix
Pasta, beans, and rice
Dried fruit and even candy! 🍬
Bring Your Own Containers
Pack cloth bags, glass jars, or clean plastic containers from home.
Weigh Before You Fill
Ask someone at the store to weigh your empty container (called the “tare weight”)—so you only pay for what’s inside!
Scoop and Smile!
Use the scooper or funnel to fill your container with what you need. Take only as much as you’ll use. 🥄
Label It
Write the bin number or food name on your container or a tag.
🎒 Bring a “Bulk Bin Bag” on shopping day
🧠 Make a list of what you want to refill—like cereal, snacks, or baking stuff
🎨 Decorate your jars at home with stickers or labels!
When you shop in bulk and bring your own containers:
You skip plastic packaging completely
You create less trash
You help protect animals and oceans 🌊🐬
You save money—woohoo!
Start small! Pick one or two foods your family eats a lot (like rice or snacks) and try buying them from the bulk bins. Once you start, you’ll love it!
So go on, grab your jars and bags—bulk bins are ready to be your best (eco) friend! 💚

It encourages kids, families, and communities to take simple steps that protect the earth and create a healthier world for future generations.
Every year, on the first Monday of October, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Habitat Day. This special day was created by the United Nations back in 1985 to remind us of two very important things. First, that every single person has the right to adequate shelter. Second, that we all share the power and responsibility to shape the future of our cities, towns, and natural spaces.
